Sand Island Internment Camp, Honolulu, Oahu Island

Eighth Transfer Group: March 1943

This internee was among forty-two Issei men who were sent in the eighth transfer group for internment in U.S. Army and Justice Department camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp, with some paroled to War Relocation Authority camps to reunite with family or transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Arrived in Honolulu with 450 other internees aboard the military troopship the Yarmouth.

Before the war, Meijiro Hayashi was an active member of the Hanapepe Japanese Christian Church and the Makaweli PTA. His sons Fumio and Shimei served in the U.S. military during World War II. Fumio Hayashi was a member of the 100th Infantry Battalion.
