This internee was among forty-nine men (mostly Issei) who were sent in the fifth transfer group for internment in U.S. Army and Justice Department camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp, with some paroled to War Relocation Authority camps to reunite with family or transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Three of Tatsuo Ito's sons served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Sumio Ito was a staff sergeant with the 100th Infantry Battalion; Akira Ito was a member of the Headquarters Company of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team; and Kiyoshi Ito served with the "Zebra Platoon," a group within the Military Intelligence Service trained in civilian censorship.
