Honouliuli Internment Camp, Oahu Island


This internee was among thirty-four Issei men who were sent in the ninth transfer group for internment in U.S. Army and Justice Department camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp, with some paroled to War Relocation Authority camps to reunite with family or transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Returned to Hawaii: December 1945

Arrived in Honolulu with about 775 other internees aboard the military troopship the Shawnee.


Masao Kobayashi, born in Tokyo, immigrated to Hawaii and took on the American name Henry. He married Hatsuyo Takara in Honolulu in 1941, and in the year before his internment, son Ralph Michio was born. He also used the name Henry Asaichi Katsuno, and his wife and son adopted Katsuno as their family name as well. 

Three years after his return from internment, Henry Asaichi Katsuno was killed attempting to break up a fight in downtown Honolulu.
