Topaz Concentration Camp, Utah

March 1943 - November 1944


In March 1943, as Yoshiyuki Kawakami was being sent into internment on the Mainland, brother Tetsuro Kawakami was volunteering for a newly created segregated U.S. Army unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Tetsuro Kawakami would be killed in Italy in July 1944 and posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
