Arrived in Honolulu with some 60 other Hawaii internees aboard the military troopship the Mariposa.


Masagoro Kawashima's older brother Herbert M.U. Kawashima served in the U.S. armed forces initially as a staff sergeant with the 298th Infantry of the Hawaii National Guard, which had been called to active duty in the islands shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. Herbert Kawashima later received liguistics training at the Military Intelligence Service Language School at Camp Savage, Minnesota, and served in the China-Burma-India theater during the war.
