Itsuzo Maeda arrived in the Hawaiian Islands from his native Kumamoto Prefecture at the age of fifteen. He found work as a carpenter's helper and before long had established his own contracting business.

By the outbreak of World War II, he was a prominent building contractor on Kauai Island. After the war, Maeda partnered with other businessmen to establish Kauai Builders, one of the largest contracting businesses on the island.
