Zenko Matayoshi was among a group of Japanese and Okinawan doctors who operated twelve private hospitals on the Big Island. Matayoshi Hospital opened in the early 1920s and cared for Hilo residents for more than 40 years. 

Zenko Matayoshi's son Herbert Tatsuo Matayoshi served as mayor of Hawaii Island from 1974 to 1984.
