In March 1943, at about the time of Kakichi Matsuura's arrest, two of his sons, David Shigeru Matsuura and Hachiro Matsuura, volunteered for the newly created segregated unit of the U.S. Army. David Shigeru served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team; Hachiro was a U.S. veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
