Sand Island Internment Camp, Honolulu, Oahu Island


This internee was among forty-nine men (mostly Issei) who were sent in the fifth transfer group for internment in U.S. Army and Justice Department camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp, with some paroled to War Relocation Authority camps to reunite with family or transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Included among the repatriates who left from New York on the M.S. Gripsholm were 72 Hawaii internees and their families.


Rev. Eimu Miake first arrived in the islands in 1930 and served as a minister at the Honpa Hongwanji Mission on Fort Street in Honolulu. He repatriated to Japan during the war, but returned in 1950 to serve once again at the Honpa Hongwanji temple.
