Florence Atsuko was the step-granddaughter and niece of Yoshie Miyao, widow of the founder of the Izumo Taisha Shrine. Reared by Yoshie from infancy, teenaged Florence was in California when the war broke out and was subsequently sent to the Rohwer camp. Through appeals to the U.S. government by Yoshie Miyao, Florence was transferred to the Crystal City Internment Camp and reunited with her grandmother.
