In 1940, Sadao Moriyama won a trip to Japan by taking first place in a Japanese language oratory contest sponsored by the Buddhist Nisei Club. The topic of his speech was "The Real American." 

During the war, two of his brothers, Toshio Moriyama and Charles Haruo Moriyama, served in the U.S. military. Toshio was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Charles Haruo was a linguist with the army's Military Intelligence Service.
