Sand Island Internment Camp, Honolulu, Oahu Island


This internee was among 109 men (mostly Issei) who were sent on the third transfer ship for internment in U.S. Army and Justice Department camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp, with some paroled to War Relocation Authority camps to reunite with family or transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Arrived in Honolulu with 450 other internees aboard the military troopship the Yarmouth.


Yuichi Nakamura came with his family as a teenager to Kauai Island from his native Hiroshima. He later moved to Honolulu and in 1930 opened a hotel in the city's immigrant A'ala district. He was a member of the Honolulu Japanese Hotel Association, along with some ten other innkeepers. Members who also were interned included Tokuji Baba, Sukeichi Koide, Ichiro Sato, and Jinshichi Tokairin.
