Three of Takao Nishimura's brothers served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Brother Yukitsugu Nishimura was a member of the 100th Infantry Battalion and in 2014 was among three other unit veterans awarded the French government's Legion of Honor for their service during World War II. One of the other 100th Battalion honorees was a grandson of fellow internee Kinai Ikuma.
