Some nine months after Buntaro Tanaka's release from confinement, son Daniel Masaru Tanaka joined 2,700 other Hawaii volunteers as members of the segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He was assigned to the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion. After the war, Daniel Tanaka served as a C-54 crew member during the Berlin Airlift. Buntaro Tanaka's two other sons, Herbert Shigetoshi and Katsuki, also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
