Tokumatsu Yamada's son Tom Tsutomu Yamada was a U.S. Army interpreter throughout the war, serving in Australia and the Philippines, and then at the war's end in Japan. Drafted in 1941, he was a member of the 100th Infantry Battalion before being transferred for language training at the Military Intelligence Service's Language School at Camp Savage, Minnesota.
