Before the war, Takeo Yamamoto was the head instructor of the upper school at the Hawaii Chuo Gakuin Japanese Language School in Honolulu. Nicknamed "Gombei Yamamoto," he shared a number of characteristics with the famous Japanese general and former prime minister, including a samurai-like dedication and discipline, according to fellow teacher and internee Shozo Takahashi.
A number of other teachers from Chuo Gakuin were incarcerated during the war. They included Teruo Konishi, George Mamoru Nakagawa, Chikashi Nakayama, Arthur Katsumi Niino, Shozo Takahashi, Jitsuo Takato, Yoshitami Jack Tasaka, and Harry Minoru Urata.
