In the decade before World War II, Masaru Yokotake was a leading member of the Hawaii Democratic Party, having been elected as a Kauai Island representative to the party's Central Committee.
His eldest son, Calvin Masao Yokotake, was a member of the U.S. Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Three other sons also would serve in the U.S. military in the postwar years.
