In the spring of 1943, as Teizo Beppu remained incarcerated at Haiku Camp, his son Tadao Beppu volunteered for U.S. military service. A platoon sergeant with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Tadao Beppu was wounded in action and spent a year hospitalized. After the war, Tadao Beppu joined with other returning veterans to craft the rise of the Hawaii Democratic party. He served as an aide to territorial House Majority Leader Daniel Inouye and then won political office himself in 1957. Tadao Beppu went on to serve as the state's speaker of the House for seven years, from 1967 to 1974.
