Kyutaro Matsubara was the brother of Shikazo Hayashi, who was the father of Hoichi Hayashi. In 1941, Hoichi changed his name to Matsubara, likely the result of his adoption by his uncle.
Kyutaro Matsubara was almost 70 years old when he died in Jerome. His daughter, Setsuko, also died under incarceration. Her death occurred a year and a half later, in November 1944, at the Gila River Concentration Camp in Arizona.
