Two weeks after Shunichi Nekomoto was sent to be incarcerated on the Mainland, his wife died in Honolulu, leaving their fourteen-year-old daughter without either parent. Half a year later, in November 1942, Takeko Nekomoto was sent with a group of about one hundred Hawaii residents (mostly U.S. citizens) to the Jerome Concentration Camp in Arkansas. Chaperoning Takeko was Kikuyo Suetomi, the wife of Rev. Koten Suetomi, who herself was being transferred to the Mainland to join her internee husband.
