When Kikuyo Suetomi was transferred to the mainland in November 1942, she chaperoned fourteen-year-old Takeko Annabell Nekomoto. Takeko Annabell had entered internment as a way to reunite with her father, Shunichi Nekomoto, who was then under incarceration at the Lordsburg camp in New Mexico. Two weeks after her father had been sent to the mainland, Takeko's mother had died in Honolulu, leaving the young teenager alone without a parent.
