Chiyomatsu Hamamura was instrumental in the development of a Japanese language school in Anahola before the war. After Pearl Harbor, two of his sons also were incarcerated: Robert Yutaka, the Anahola postmaster, was imprisoned in the Wailua County Jail for three months in spring 1942; Edward Hiroshi, a University of Southern California student when the war broke out, was sent to the Granada Relocation Camp in Colorado.
