Sand Island Internment Camp, Honolulu, Oahu Island


This internee was in the first group of 172 men (mostly Issei) who were sent aboard the military transport ship U.S. Grant for internment in U.S. Army and Justice Department camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp, with some paroled to War Relocation Authority camps to reunite with family or transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Arrived in Honolulu with 450 other internees aboard the military troopship the Yarmouth.


Tsunetaro Harada's sons, Raymond Kosaku Harada and Kenji Benjamin Harada, served in the U.S. military during World War II. Raymond Harada was a member of the 100th Infantry Battalion. He and brother Kenji Benjamin both also served in the Army's Military Intelligence Service, undergoing linguistics training at the MIS Language School.
