In early 1943, Risaku Kanaya's two sons signed up to serve in a segregated Japanese American military, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Younger brother Edward Torao Kanaya served in the 206th Army Ground Forces Band, playing music from the islands to boost morale and performing at military ceremonies. Walter Etsutoshi Kanaya was a private with the 442nd's 2nd Battalion. In October 1944, he was killed in the Vosges Mountains of France.
