Hoichi Hayashi was the son of Hawaii internee Shikazo Hayashi. In 1941, he changed his name to Hoichi Matsubara, likely the result of his adoption by his uncle, Kyutaro Matsubara, who was Shikazo Hayashi's brother.

Hoichi Matsubara and Fumiko Carol Sumida of Elk Grove, California, were married in Gila River Camp.
