Mildred Mieko Oka was the daughter of barber Wahei Oka. In October 1942, she married Tatsuo Morikuni, who was arrested shortly there after, and the two were sent for incarceration on the Mainland.
At about this same time, Wahei Oka also was arrested. He would be interned for most of the war at Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Mildred and Tatsuo Morikuni's two eldest children were born under confinement, son Norman Tatsumi in Jerome, Arkansas, and daughter Karen Tamiye in Gila River, Arizona.
