Shigezo Nakao was a prominent member of the Kauai Japanese American community, a chairman of committees that greeted Japanese naval training ships and a well known developer of large construction projects on the island. 

Two of his sons served in the U.S. Army: Yasuo Nakao during World War II and Yukio Nakao as an interrogator and translator with the occupation forces in Japan.
