Sand Island Internment Camp, Honolulu, Oahu Island


Forty-nine men (mostly Issei) were sent in the fifth transfer group for internment in U.S. Army and Department of Justice camps on the Mainland. The internees were sent together from camp to camp. Some were paroled to War Relocation Authority camps and reunited with family members, others were transferred for repatriation to Japan.

Returned to Hawaii: November 1945

Arrived in Honolulu with 450 other internees aboard the military troopship the Yarmouth.


Before the war, Tokuji Onodera served as an executive officer of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce. 

In the summer of 1943, he was sent from Santa Fe camp to New York with a group of repatriates bound for Japan. At the last minute, Onodera was removed from the ship, the M.S. Gripsholm, and sent back to Santa Fe. He remained incarcerated there until his release and return to Hawaii in late 1945.
