Minoru Shinno was born in Lihue, Kauai Island. While living in Japan in the 1920s, he served in the Japanese Imperial Navy for four years. Shinno returned to Hawaii in 1938. In December 1942, he was found guilty in provost court of failing to register his Japanese military service and was ordered to serve two years in prison following his release from internment.
