Shigeru Ernest Matsusaka was a veteran conscript of the U.S. Army in World War I, serving in the Headquarters Company of the Hawaiian Regiment. Other WWI veterans who were interned include Sanji Abe, Frank Futoshi Arakawa, Frank Takeshi Ishii, Sukeichi Koide, Ichitaro Ozaki, and Ichiro Sato.

Matsusaka's son, Edwin Noboru Matsusaka, served in the U.S. Military Intelligence Service during World War II.
